Over the summer, Liverpool treated St. Mary’s like their own personal Tesco Express, popping in every now and then to pick up whatever they were short of – a striker, a creative midfielder, a centre back – the bare essentials really.
Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren have all been plucked from the south coast and taken to Merseyside, leaving a Southampton team that performed so admirably and entertainingly last season without some of its stars.
As luck would have it, the Premier League fixture list randomly threw them together at the first time of asking, ensuring a quick-fire reunion for the new Reds and their former Saints colleagues. It’s almost like the computer that decides the fixtures developed a consciousness and a flair for irony and spat out this pairing.
To celebrate, we’ve put up a welcoming billboard for Saints fans arriving to the city at Liverpool’s Lime Street Station. And by ‘welcoming’ we do of course mean ‘taking the piss out of them’.
There has been massive upheaval at St. Mary’s over the summer with manager, Mauricio Pochettino taking over at Tottenham and last season’s stalwarts being plucked by the league’s big boys. Luke Shaw is now at Old Trafford, Calum Chambers at the Emirates, but by far and away the biggest vultures have been Liverpool with their three arrivals from the club. With more arrivals expected at Lime Street Station, it was the perfect place to plonk this billboard.
